How to Reduce the Risk of Deadly Dryer Fires

Reading time: 2 min

The UL-listed DEDPV-705 Dryer Exhaust Duct Power Ventilator provides peace of mind by minimizing the risk of fire due to lint buildup.

Homes across the world are hiding an invisible hazard many builders and homeowners don’t think about until the worst happens: fires from lint ignition in the dryer system. In fact, lint ignition was the leading cause of the nearly 16,000 annual washer/dryer fires in the U.S. each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association

Even if you clean your dryer screens after each use, flammable lint still can make its way out of the appliance and into the ductwork, where it builds up. Regular maintenance is one component of prevention, but a Fantech dryer exhaust solution can provide extra assurance by removing lint trapped in the duct.

The UL-listed DEDPV-705 Dryer Exhaust Duct Power Ventilator provides peace of mind along with even greater flexibility than previous models.

DEDPV-705 maintains an exhaust velocity ideal for keeping lint entrained in the flow of air during its journey to the outside, thereby minimizing the risk of fire due to lint buildup. The DEDPV-705 also continues to operate for a short period of time after the dryer stops, which cools the clothes and lessens the risk of spontaneous combustion.

Additionally, the ventilator has a visual panel that indicates proper operation but also alerts the homeowner of potential problems such as a locked rotor or duct blockage. This advanced warning allows the user to take action to clean the dryer exhaust duct or seek service.

It is recommendeded that installers add a DBLT4W secondary lint trap in addition to the traditional lint screen inside the dryer. The secondary trap collects additional lint, which can lessen the task of cleaning out the exhaust duct. Builders and remodelers should be sure to educate customers on regular maintenance, including cleaning the secondary lint trap as frequently as the dryer lint screen.

Increased flexibility

Along with its safety features, the DEDPV-705 is the first dryer exhaust fan listed to UL-705 for both gas and electric dryer applications. The UL-705 DEDPV standard was carefully designed for the safe operation of extra-long dryer exhaust duct runs. Both the 2015 and 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) and International Mechanical Code (IMC) require dryer exhaust fans to comply with the UL-705 supplementary addendum for Dryer Exhaust Duct Power Ventilators.
